Bottom Row Typing Lesson: B and N Keys

Time to move down to the bottom row. B and N are typed with the index finger of each hand reaching downward.

Remember to return your fingers to F and J after each reach. N is a very common letter that appears in many everyday words.

What You Learn In This Lesson

B and N introduce the bottom row. Your index fingers now reach in three directions: sideways, up, and down.

Downward reach

B is reached by curling the left index finger down. N is reached by curling the right index finger down.

N is very common

N appears in and, not, in, on, and many more. Accurate N typing has a big impact on overall speed.

Three-direction index fingers

Your index fingers now handle home row, lateral, top-row, and bottom-row keys. This is their full workload.

Practice The Lesson

Curl your index fingers down for B and N. Return to the home row between every key press.

Finger Guide

These are the exact finger assignments for this lesson. Keep the rest of your fingers relaxed and avoid lifting the whole hand.

B Left index finger (reach down from F)
N Right index finger (reach down from J)

How To Practice

Start on the home row with index fingers on F and J.
Curl the left index finger down to B and press it, then return to F.
Curl the right index finger down to N and press it, then return to J.
Practice mixing B and N with top-row and home-row keys for fluid transitions.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Reaching too far for B

B is right below the gap between F and G. A small curl is enough. Overreaching shifts the whole hand.

Using the wrong hand for N

N is right hand. Beginners sometimes reach for it with the left index finger. Keep the hand assignments strict.

Dropping the wrist during bottom-row reaches

Keep your wrist level when reaching down. Dropping it leads to strain and slower return to home row.

Losing other fingers during the reach

When your index finger curls down, the other fingers may lift. Try to keep them lightly touching the home row.

What Comes Next

The next lesson teaches V and M, the last bottom-row index finger reaches. After that, your index fingers will be fully trained.
