Home Row Typing Lesson: G and H Keys

This is the final home row lesson. G and H are typed by reaching the index finger of each hand inward.

What You Learn In This Lesson

G and H are the first reach keys you will learn. They require moving your index finger away from its home position and back.

Index finger reaches

G is reached with the left index finger. H is reached with the right index finger. These are lateral moves, not up or down.

Minimal hand movement

Only the index finger should move. Try to keep your other fingers as still as possible during the reach.

Return to F and J

After pressing G or H, bring the index finger straight back to F or J. The bumps on those keys confirm you are home.

Practice The Lesson

Practice reaching G and H with your index fingers while keeping the rest of your hand stable on the home row.

Finger Guide

These are the exact finger assignments for this lesson. Keep the rest of your fingers relaxed and avoid lifting the whole hand.

G Left index finger (reach right)
H Right index finger (reach left)
A Left pinky
S Left ring finger
D Left middle finger
F Left index finger
J Right index finger
K Right middle finger
L Right ring finger
; Right pinky

How To Practice

Start with both hands on the home row.
When you see G, reach your left index finger to the right and press it, then return to F.
When you see H, reach your right index finger to the left and press it, then return to J.
Keep the other seven fingers on their home keys during each reach.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Moving the whole hand for G or H

Only the index finger should leave its home key. If your whole hand shifts, your other fingers lose their positions.

Confusing G and H

G is left-hand, H is right-hand. If you mix them up, slow down and say the finger assignment out loud.

Forgetting to return

The reach is a round trip. Press the key and come back. Leaving the index finger on G or H causes errors on the next key.

Tensing the wrist during reaches

Keep your wrist relaxed and let the finger do the work. Tension in the wrist leads to fatigue and slower typing.

What Comes Next

With the full home row mastered, the next lesson moves up to the top row to learn E and I with your middle fingers.
